Fling Updates

As usual, we bring you the VMware Flings which saw some updates in May.

Lightning Labs

We all know how difficult it is to fit in any resemblance of training into our days.  Thankfully VMware has acknowledges the struggle and introduced a series of “Lighting Labs” in the Hands-On Labs (HOL) portal.  These are designed to be completed in 30 minutes or less!  Please review the list below for the latest offerings or click here to access the Lighting Labs catalog.

  • HOL-1903-99-NET - VMware NSX - Logical Switching
  • HOL-1908-91-HCI - vSAN 6.7 - Setup, Sizing & Enablement
  • HOL-1911-91-SDC - vSphere 6.7 - Simple & Efficient Management at Scale
  • HOL-1987-91-HBD - VMware on AWS - Deploying a SDDC
  • HOL-1951-91-VWS - Workspace ONE - Advanced Integration
  • HOL-1951-92-VWS - Horizon 7 - Horizon Components and Architecture

Best practices for integrating Ansible with vRealize Automation

A cool webinar is available for off-line viewing in which folks from Redhat and SovLabs discuss provisioning Ansible through vRA. This involves Ansible Tower and is a good way to understand how the two work if you want a real demo.

VMworld 2019

It’s approaching that time of year, and VMworld 2019 is just around the corner. Registration is now open for early bird rates, and also (and more importantly) those reduced-rates on hotels. It’s back in San Francisco this year which means hotel prices are high, so jumping on these special rates early is important to keeping costs low. Graham also has a good blog article with some secrets.

Fix for replacing NSX-T cluster certificate

In case you tried to replace the cluster certificate in NSX-T 2.4 and found a cryptic failure when POSTing to the relevant API, you’ll be glad to know this was an acknowledged bug in 2.4.0 which has now been fixed in 2.4.1. You won’t find this (so far) in the release notes, but supposedly a KB is being drafted. Heads up.

VeeamON 2019 Announcements

The annual Veeam conference just wrapped in Miami in late May, and although there weren’t a tremendous number of face-melting announcements, they did release Veeam Availability Orchestrator (VAO) v2.0 which, among other advancements, includes the ability to orchestrate recovery from backup and not just replication. Veeam also announced they’ve hit an enormous $1B run rate which was predicted last year. Official announcements page is here with CRN coverage here.

Pure Storage Plugin v3 for vRO Update

If you use Pure and also vRO, you may be delighted to know that they have updated the plugin with bug fixes but actually a lot of features. Check out the Marketplace page here and coverage from Cody here.

VMware Blog Post Updates

As always, the VMware official blogs are a great resource for not only what’s new, but also what’s been around that you might have missed. Here are some good ones we’ve selected from last month:

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC

A couple weeks ago, DellEMC announced a pretty large offering around delivering a managed VMware SDDC stack on-premises (on DellEMC gear, of course). This sounds like it could be a pretty good deal for some customers, and there’s a good overview blog article here.
