Speed and power have a universal appeal – be it measured in Horsepower and Torque or IOPS and Latency.

A Honda is nice.  A BMW is sweet.  A Lamborghini is ridiculous.  Where is the break point where more is less when it comes to performance for common city driving?  I would argue its someplace between BMW and Maserati….way before Ferrari and a Lambo.  We say and think this because we think of the operational reality of driving a Lambo…..insurance, low clearance in the land of speed bumps and the inability to ever experience the top end of the performance without access to a dedicated track.  90 percent of us, if ever given a Lamborghini, would probably sell it on day 2 to get a Premium car that maps to our own operational reality and bank the rest.

The Storage and Server Industry is no different.  It has been through a revolution thanks to Moore’s Law.  The processing power and latency of the new server and storage stack is now clearly ridiculous……sort of Maserati like – regardless of your religion (HP, Cisco, IBM, Dell, whitebox etc..).  I argue that we have reached the break point without having realized it.  At this point, our continued marketing efforts around speed and performance become little more than a “my rocket is faster than your rocket” childlike argument.  They do nothing to convince customers of improved business outcomes.

The challenges of today’s customer are operational in nature, not related to performance bottlenecks.  These are the questions that our customers need answered:

  1. How does the proposed infrastructure map to our existing operational procedures?
    1. Does it have integration to our Service Management or Ticketing tools?
    2. Does it natively comply with our encryption and security controls?
    3. Can it be upgraded without impacting its ability to service workloads in a 24/7/365 business?
    4. Does it natively integrate with our Load Balancing and Performance / QOS standards?
    5. Does it self-report on resource consumption?
    6. Does it integrate with Cloud based resource pools (AWS, Azure, etc..)?

IT Departments have a unique opportunity to create or improve their internal brand – if they can just change the lenses in their glasses.  They need to push back on vendors that are still showing rack diagrams and potential savings in air conditioning bills – and help force the argument that will move the needle on true business outcomes – and those are all operational in nature.

The journey to a legitimate hybrid cloud starts with choosing infrastructure and data center partners that have made investments in the operational efficiencies – not asking you what it’s going to take to see you drive away in a new Lambo today.
